A serendipitous meeting of 10 beautiful minds here in Eugene simultaneously wished bon voyage to Brent y yo as we venture south and allowed for a much needed Waking Ground catharsis. It also brought two new bright souls into this family-in-process: Welcome Bodhi and Katie.

Here is my interpretation of the happenings:

- We are not interested in being part of Camp I am next year. Too much politics. Before we open our group's edges we must establish our core. Our first priority is figuring out who we are. Our feelings were reinforced by the catalyst call, the fourth, from Clif (We owe $33 to settle up on the truck). We do however, want to camp near Camp I am next year, along with Heebee's, Swingers and Snuggletown

- We are interested in Coy's ideas of being more self-sufficient. Unfortunately, most of us do not have our own gypsy caravans (despite the apparent universal desire within our group to be a gypsy). However, small groups are valuable, not just for possible camping logistics such as food, water and private shelter, but within the planning stages as well. This brings us to PODS.

- Pods are small groups of people who can organize themselves whenever and however but share the knowledge of the groups CORE VALUES and are able to make group decisions that do not necessitate full group consensus. They are also responsible for jump-starting their visions into reality, if they so desire. This may simply entail communicating vital Pod information to the larger group.

- CORE VALUES are on the agenda of upcoming PODDINGS. Some topics we began exploring are:
* minimizing our dependence on material stuff
* creating thoughtful, intentional group space
* encouraging creative expression
* making decisions by consensus
* consciously deconstructing power structures and hierarchies

As a good friend explained to me: Our group's CORE VALUES should be the filter that all ideas and people run through to make sure they belong within its perimeter. They are the beginning of our Identity. CORE VALUES make up the umbrella that encompasses all the little pods and the little fishies swimmin' around doing their thing. They unite us and protect us, allow us to function safely, freely and more fully.

- Other ideas got people excited:
* constructing a stage for performers in our group to do their thing, to entice people into our space, to provide us with regular entertainment and to make our space run off creativity and self-expression rather than addiction or material trade.
* Having a General Store. Building shelves for people to put their excess stuff and for other people to come and take what they need. Virtually hand's free service with the potential to help a lot of people.
* Hosting art workshops, building mazes, Having RECESS everyday.

Energy grew like yeast in warm water and we talked well into the night. It made this disillusioned Burner believe again.

Coy, there should be some money coming your way soon. Please repost your address so we know where to send you what we can.

If anyone wants to pitch in on the $33 you can go ahead and give me 1/25th of that the next time you see me (or better yet buy my a cup of coffee cuz chances are that's where its going anyway). Its worth it to me to send the check so I don't have to keep avoiding Clif's calls. I declare it my last act as treasurer.

Yoko, Good luck in your concert tomorrow. I am sorry to miss it.

I love you all
Helen/Maven

next year

Regarding future camp:

While there are many things I could say about my experience at BM this year, I'd rather look positively forward to co-creating an even better experience next year.

I want to be part of a creative, egalitarian group of people with balanced time/energy commitments among all. I feel that this is easier to achieve with a small group of dedicated people or Coy's idea of a coalition of small, self-sufficient subcamps, who trade dinners with each other.

I'd rather be minimalist and self-sufficient than rely on the large village, which provided less than what they offered and asked for more than most of us expected.

I really enjoyed our service to the community this year, though I'd like to explore alternative ways of promoting human interaction besides consumption. Joy & Serenity across the street was a big inspiration to me. They simply created a beautiful, interactive space which drew people in. What I'm saying is, we don't need to be serving something for people to come. It would be wonderful if the first motivation was appreciation for beauty or human interaction rather than "I'm hungry" or "I need my caffeine fix". Meeting cool people and building morningtime community seemed to be secondary to a lot of people who would "use" us like a Starbucks -- with thanks, of course, but again it was secondary. Contrast that with Joy & Serenity: no one can "take advantage" of the colorful streamers because that option is simply not provided.

Fully admitting that I too take advantage of service-oriented camps (the bars), for my own time and energy I'd rather create a beautiful space that evokes emotion or facilitates authentic human interaction. Like J & S, or the shadowy metal cocooon on the corner of 7:30 and Catharsis.

I'm also way down for gypsy weekend gatherings.

love,
Pyramis

wired magazine at decomp

I was interviewed by Wired Magazine for their coverage of Burning Man Decompression in San Francisco last weekend. I got a call from Clif last sunday saying that he would like to get together for a pot luck sometime soon so that we can "settle up." It turns out that we owe him $87 for final truck rental expenses. I was not aware of this unbudgeted for expense until he called. We have no money left in our camp fund. I have directed people who since the event have offered to chip in more to send it to Coy since he shouldered more then his fair share of group contributions. Most people are not here in Eugene at the moment, which makes collecting the $3.63 from each person relatively unreasonable. Jack came up with the idea that maybe we could work off some of our debt. I'm not sure if that is what Clif has in mind but we can try. Any other suggestions?
PS Hope all is well wherever you find yourself. Sunday:

DELICIOUS!

These are the head chefs for that night, but cooking for 30 people is hard work and they will need lots of help. These days aren't set in stone either, if you don't like your day let me know and we'll change it. If you want to be head chef let me know what night and what you want to cook, I'll buy all food with the group fund.

The Gift of Peace

Good news friends,
Peace Cereal is donating 100 lbs of granola to our camp! Never an easy thing to discuss when it comes to Burning Man. But I think to avoid misunderstandings and potential hurt feelings as a camp we need to talk about it, because the nasty, stinking truth is that this whole wonderful week of gifting experience is in "real-life" not necessarily free. There are many ingredients that go into what we are creating as a camp: inspiration, organization, time, materials, shelters, fuel for body and auto, open hearts, creative minds and yes money. No one person should be asked or assumed to take on the responsibility for any of these ingredients all alone. I see two very general options in terms of how we can spend money as individuals for the benefit of Waking Grounds as a whole. We can either create some sort of group fund where we all pitch in an agreed upon amount and then decide what parts of the camp the money goes towards OR we can pay for what we can when we can and trust that everyone else is doing the same. However, even if we decide not to create a group fund, it should still be a group decision.
Please Respond: this is not only an important opportunity for group discussion, but something I find very interesting.

village info

alright all, to join this village camps are asked to pay between $10 and $30 per person dependent on their level of need, ie water, power, kitchen, etc. We have our own kitchen but will be sharing water and power with the village.
Our contribution to the village will be taken care of with the truck rental. If we pay $500 for the truck (1/2), we are covering a fair share for thirty people and won't be asked to kick down any extra toward the village.
The village is asking us to bring extra rugs or carpeting for the communal shade structure, visible at:
shade structure link

So beyond the truck rental costs, our camp will be collecting money for kitchen costs and food costs. WE can work this out August 15th or when we meet again.
So far I have heard no complaints about joining the village and am assuming it is alright with everybody. It carries with it the advantage of solving our water and power needs and seems to carry no extra burden beyond moving our address.

gabe

transport to burn/join a village

we've been invited to join a village at the burn, which would mean moving our camp a block over to 7:30 and Ego. The village is made up of many small camps from Eugene and Portland like ours, and the camp that has invited us is the country fair embassy camp, who I have been talking with about a ride share. They have a large space for their village that would be able to accomodate our entire camp, allowing us to remain a unified camp within a larger village.
I have more info about the village coming, but it sounds to me like this is a great opportunity to involve our camp in a larger community, easing concerns over serving breakfast to the public, making water more available and cheaper, and giving us access to many of their other infrastructure elements, like a 60 kW generator.
The contact is Clif Cox in Eugene, a country fair worker and an organizer of the village. We have a Penske truck that we can share with their camp, the embassy camp, and drive down on the 25th from Eugene. This will dramatically decrease the camp costs.

Things that would not change if we joined the village:
kitchen would still be our camp, wakinggrounds would still be registered, however, we would have to direct people to the new address a block away, amount of space delegated to our camp for structures would remain the same, and the services we offer the larger burner community would still be the same.
Things that would be different:
We'd be able to share meals more easily with other kitchens in the village, including the tuna camp which brings about a ton of fresh tuna to serve through the week, we'd be using water from a more communal source that is filled by the BRC infrastructure instead of hauling all our own, we'd have more strangers becoming neighbors as we would be included in the village, and we'd be playing music with a lot more people, which might involve fire dancers mixing with belly dancers and everything getting crazy. Finally, our address would change, causing confusion among the people you may have already told where to find us.

On a side note, anyone interested in flying to the burn or at the burn should let me know, clif is a pilot and is considering renting a plane to take down there. It would be rather inexpensive.

Our address at Black Rock city

Its finally in! This is a bigger project than I can do alone. I love to feed people, but I need at least one other person willing to take on some elements of responsibility. Let me know if you are so inclined and we can start making real plans. For the record, (and this may be late anyway) I am cool with not making this "public" for the sake of not having to worry about permits.

We are feeding people in three different capacities:
1. Camp meals. Lunch and dinner (we can join in the "public breakfast"). To make lunch easy and convienent we'll bring fixings that we can each do on our own (ex. sandwich stuff). I say we plan 6 camp dinners (monday to saturday)and take turns doing the cooking. To do this I need EVERYBODY to a) Team up with one other person you like working with b) Pick a night you can commit to cooking. c) Plan a menu and make a list of everything you need (Including not only all ingredients, but all cooking aparati, ie. big pan, spatula ect.) d) keep in mind we have stovetop only and limited cooler space. e) email me the list ASAP so that I can start budgeting, try to set up deals for free food, scout out dumpsters ect. (PS would love help with this part). I want to make food as cheap as possible, my goal is $5/day/person. If you need help with menu ideas let me know.

2. Breakfast Bar. Open invitation to our friends. I have heard that there is coffee set up, do we have a percolator? I have a big french press, maybe if we had a couple of those and a big thermos it would work our. Should we buy tea? Momma Hudson is helping us out by making a whole bunch of homemade granola. But perhaps we should get some other cereal options. I also think we should get pancake mix for some special morning. Should we invest in plastic bowls and spoons or let people bring their own?

3. Romantic dinners on Coy's deck. I love this idea. Happy to put my many years of food service skills to work. Coy, let me know what I should get when I do the big shopping trip.

OK. Not too bad. I also need information about cooking and storage, who's bringing what and what we still need to buy, steal or borrow.
I should be in Eugene on August 9th. Hopefully a big group of us can get together then.

signing off from Pender Island, BC.
Helen

Don't forget to clap!

From the Wacky Emergence department... We'll see if by the end of the week we can get a 37,000 person Big Clap booming over the playa.

bus to Bman

Kevin (new to the group) has a bus that is 35'long and has a roof rack. A Ten day rental (giving us three days to set up camp) without taking into account gas or insurance (10mpg, don't know insurance costs yet) would be about $800. I think that's what we paid for the van last year with insurance but without gas. That means that a Uhaul van is probably the best deal, because the family van we took last year had zero cargo room. I have one reserved under my name here in Eugene.

3 paths

You might find interesting...

Things you did not know you would need at Burning Man

Guide for Second Timers

example of a Theme Camp Fundraiser

third dome

 dodec1
Originally uploaded by skuz.
we just finished the third dome for the seminar
It has about a 16-18 foot radius and is constructed of twenty bamboo poles, hemp twine and ten rebar stakes. I am sitting in a cafe in Urbana, Illinois with my two wonderful friends, Josie and Katherine who I Iived with in Quito. Katherine and I are at the beginning of a 7 week road trip around new england and the central atlantic coast. While catching up from a year apart, it is impossible not to share my enthusiasm for an event that made me question everything, and want to reinvent it all. I truly could not be doing it with a more inspiring group of people. The last meeting was a productive, enjoyable, community building experience, I am so glad I was there for it. I am excited for the seeds that are planted while I am away, and the gardening to be done when I come back. In the meanwhile, I am more than willing to do whatever work I can, you can contact me through the blog, through the group email or by phone (503)307-6287.
Your Casting Director and Soul Foodist Honcho,
Helen

Dome Seminar

 DomeSeminar

1447 Lincoln, in the backyard (next to canal).
Starting today, June 15.
On-going.
First dome goes up around 6PM.
Bring stuff to barbque, booze.

Bamboo collection occuring all afternoon.
call gabe with questions
5415172314

dome building

Mike and I are meeting Sunday afternoon at his house near the river for a dome building session.
This will be the first Eugene dome session.
I want to build a small dome with bamboo and figure out
some schemes for the fly's eye dome.
Grab any bamboo you see lying around and we can store it in our back yard.
Meals for the camp are good. For this purpose, we'll divide a portion of the playa into zones, each relating to a different region of the mind.

The Man will stand atop a circus tent which covers a maze. When you get through the maze you climb upward to the base of the The Man who can be swiveled around in a circle by physical force. It was just a great three day party out in the woods with all the usual festival accoutriments and then some. I'll be going and would love to see some other familiar faces there. If you get a ticket by 4/27 its $130, thereafter its $142. For those of you who'd prefer to not pay cash at all, I know the volunteer coordinator at Horning's. You can volunteer 18 hours over the weekend in exchange for a pass - let me know if you have any interest in that. So, any takers?

gifting machine

 site
Originally uploaded by skuz.
this is the machine I'd like to register along with our camp
it is located in the skylight of the EMU on the UO campus
for now.
for more pictures, check my blog

Fly's Eye Dome Male Mold Sketch

Here's a rough sketch for a male mold to build a component for a paper mache fly's eye dome:

The main advantage of using a male mold is that the outside of the dome will be the surface of the component that is against the window screen.
